If the appearance of your smile is a major cosmetic concern, City of Oaks Dental in Raleigh, NC can help you tackle this common concern with professional-grade teeth whitening. Although there are various supermarket whitening alternatives, we offer a product that has proven to be superior to any over-the-counter treatments currently available. Our whitening services, highly recommended by leading dentist Dr. Vivian Throop, can whiten your teeth by quite a few shades, helping you keep your beautiful results for much longer than alternative products. We use professional-strength gels that truly do the job, reaching beneath the surface of the teeth to remove deep stains, instead of consumer-level solutions that just scrape the surface (quite literally) and provide a brighter shade of yellow at best. With the iTero Element™ 5D intraoral scanner, our digital technology replaces traditional impressions and instead digitally scans for whitening trays.

Bright white teeth can give you a beautiful smile and improve self-esteem. With either in-office or at-home teeth whitening available at City of Oaks Dental, pearly white teeth and a more radiant grin are attainable. Benefits of teeth whitening treatments at our Raleigh, NC office include:

  • Teeth can become a few shades whiter
  • Reversing surface stains
  • Fixing significantly discolored teeth
  • Safe for your teeth and gums
  • Treatments are typically fast
  • No discomfort
  • More effective than over-the-counter whitening treatments
  • You can get multiple treatments to maintain your results
  • Can be administered in the comfort of your own home

While contemplating the pros and cons of professional-strength vs. store-bought whitening solutions, you should think about what you are really attempting to do. If your smile has been white your whole life and is only recently starting to become discolored, a grocery store-purchased product could create great but temporary results. If your teeth have deeper discoloration, you might be a good candidate to receive professional-grade teeth whitening at City of Oaks Dental.

What to expect for your teeth whitening treatments depends on the process chosen by Dr. Throop. Our clinic provides a few treatments for effective and professional teeth whitening so the method chosen for you will be determined after a consultation to discuss your aesthetic goals. We also take your lifestyle into consideration. In most circumstances, our in-office teeth whitening treatments can be carried out in under an hour through the application of a prescription-strength whitening gel, along with the assistance of a light system that immediately cures and whitens the teeth several shades. At-home kits are equally effective but may provide a more subtle result over a few months.

After either procedure, you may experience sensitivity to cold or hot food, but this typically dissipates within a couple of days. Just like all dental procedures, routine dental examinations with Dr. Throop are important to maintaining results. These exams will assess everything from gum and soft tissue health and the state of each tooth. When the primary procedure is completed, we generally suggest returning for touch-ups a few times annually, in addition to professional cleanings that will help your dental health. Keep in mind that simply because your teeth are whitened doesn't necessarily mean that they're healthy. That is why regular examinations are needed. You will also receive detailed instructions regarding what food should and shouldn't be consumed in the immediate future, to include coffee and red wine.

Whitening can create fast and dramatic improvements to your teeth, and possibly, your total appearance. If you want a brighter, more radiant smile but are unsure whether over-the-counter or professional options are the appropriate solution, we invite you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Throop to explore the benefits and disadvantages of each procedure before you make your decision.

About Us
Can dental crowns be whitened?

Unfortunately, dental restorations - like crowns and bridges - are not suitable for professional whitening treatments. However, these restorations are typically made with high quality materials that are exceptionally stain resistant, meaning patients who adhere to a healthy lifestyle and dedicated oral hygiene routine can usually enjoy a beautiful, bright smile for years or even decades.

Can I get my teeth whitened if they are already sensitive?

Because professional teeth whitening can result in temporarily increased sensitivity, patients whose teeth are already sensitive should discuss this with Dr. Throop prior to treatment to better understand their options and what solutions may help minimize their post-treatment symptoms.

How long do I have to wait to eat and drink after professional teeth whitening?

Our team will provide comprehensive post-treatment care instructions based on the specific details of your teeth whitening treatment. Generally speaking, however, patients may be encouraged to wait at least an hour before eating and drinking after a professional teeth whitening treatment. Additionally, patients may be advised to avoid certain foods and beverages for up to 1-3 days, including items that are acidic, sugary, very hot or cold, or staining.

Does teeth whitening make your teeth hurt?
No, teeth whitening should not hurt. Some people experience sensitivity during or after treatment, but this is usually mild and temporary. City of Oaks Dental takes every opportunity to make sure your experience is as comfortable and pain-free as possible. Inform our team of any tooth sensitivity or discomfort before your appointment.
Do results from teeth whitening look natural?
Results from professional teeth whitening are natural-looking when working with experienced dental professionals. Dr. Throop takes into consideration your current shade, the shade you want to achieve, and your lifestyle before creating a treatment plan. Our whitening solutions can be custom-fitted to ensure a perfect fit and uniform whiteness.
How long do the results of teeth whitening last?
Results from teeth whitening usually lasts for up to a year or longer, depending on your lifestyle. Your outcomes can be extended with good oral hygiene habits and regular touch-ups. Our Raleigh, NC staff provides detailed instructions on how to maintain your results and when to schedule follow-up appointments.

The dentist office was very clean. From signing paperwork to getting X-ray done to the actual cleaning everything was awesome. I had not gone to the dentist in years and after going in I walked out with basically new teeth.
